With each week of summer that passes by, new varieties of produce make their way onto farmers market tables, grocery store aisles, and into the homes of Montgomery County residents. For those looking to purchase seasonal, fresh produce, here is your guide to what’s available now:
Fruit: Cherries and blueberries are at their peak during late June and into early July. These sweet summertime gems are currently available for pick-your-own at several local farms, including Homestead Farms in Poolesville and Butler’s Orchard in Germantown.
Vegetables: Corn, summer squash, zucchini, and cucumbers are among the most popular veggies in season during the summer. Corn, squash, and zucchini can all be easily prepared on the grill and make a great, healthy addition to any summer barbecue spread. Cucumbers are best served raw, and their high water content makes for a refreshing snack during hot summer days.
Herbs: Basil, mint, and rosemary are at their best during the summer. Basil grows best when kept in full sun, and is the perfect addition to a cold pasta salad or in a marinade. Mint can be steeped for tea, added to fruit salad, or added to smoothies. Rosemary pairs well with roasted veggies, potatoes, or fish.
Each of these items can be found in local grocery stores, at farmers markets, and at local farms. Buying seasonal, Montgomery County-grown produce not only benefits local farmers and the local economy, but fruits and vegetables have a greater nutritional content and higher quality when they are in season. However, fruits and vegetables of any kind are always a great add-on to any meal. Want to plant your own fruits and veggies?
