Policy Priority Working Groups

Our Policy Priority Working Groups, which continue the important work of the Environmental Impact, Food Economy, and Food Education Working Groups in past years, connect community partners in virtual learning opportunities and in-person site visits to advance our understanding of issues and pursuit of policy change. Topics evolve over time to align with our current organizational Policy Priorities. All meetings are open to the public; pre-registration is required. Each working group meets bi-monthly, alternating virtual meetings featuring panel presentations, subject matter expert speakers, and facilitated discussion with visits to sites across the region showcasing real-life examples of the focus policy issue in action.

Equitable & Affordable Land Access for Food Production:

  • The Equitable Land Access for Food Production Convening brings together diverse farmers in Montgomery County to share their experiences and address barriers to land access, particularly for BIPOC and women farmers. This working group will gather data, advocate for solutions, and promote strategies that reduce these barriers while increasing political support for equitable land access. It will highlight the benefits of increased local food production, healthier practices, and the impact on the community, including schools. Attendees will learn about funding opportunities, capacity-building resources, and relevant policy and advocacy issues at local, state, and federal levels. The convening also offers a platform for farmers to engage with government officials and showcase leaders in agricultural and health programs. Please check the regularly updated Events page for information on the upcoming Equitable Land Access for Food Production Convening.
  • Site Visits will be announced  as details are finalized. Location and Google Form registration details will be posted throughout the year on our Events page.

Increased Local Food Procurement:

  • The Increased Local Food Procurement Working Group is dedicated to strengthening the local food economy by addressing key challenges faced by Montgomery County-based businesses. The group collects, analyzes, and reports data to help resolve licensing and legal compliance issues for local food producers. Through efforts to increase visibility and awareness, the working group supports entrepreneurs in overcoming barriers to doing business in the county. Additionally, the group shares resources to streamline institutional food sourcing from local producers and works to enhance institutional purchasing power, enabling Montgomery County institutions to buy more food directly from local farmers. Please check the regularly updated Events page for information on the upcoming Increased Local Food Procurement Working Group meeting.
