Rockville Student Wins International Compost Awareness Week Poster Contest

International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) is held each year during the first full week of May, and each year the Compost Council Research and Education Foundation (CCREF) holds a Poster Contest, open to people of all ages and from all across the world. This year an eleventh-grade high school student, Talia Mitre, from Rockville, designed the winning poster! Talia’s poster highlights this year’s theme of “Compost! Building a Better Future.”

Representatives from Bethesda Green, CCREF, the US Composting Council, the Food Council, and our Environmental Impact Working Group (EIWG) gathered at Bethesda Green to celebrate and share Talia’s impressive work. Talia shared that she was “inspired by the idea that composting is better for our world,” and drew inspiration from her vegetable garden and flower beds at home. Susan Eisendrath, the Co-Chair of the EIWG, commended Talia’s artistry and spoke on the financial, environmental, and community benefits of composting.

Close to 300 people, age ten and above from over 30 countries, entered this year’s poster contest. The contest opens annually on September 1st, and a selective committee of Compost Council members votes to choose a winning design. The Food Council extends our most sincere congratulations to Talia for her beautiful artwork!

International Compost Awareness Week 2018 is May 6-May 12. The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection will be hosting GreenFest on May 5th to kickoff the week. To learn more about composting efforts in Montgomery County, click here.
