Step into the Shoes of SNAP Recipients: Join the 2025 MoCo SNAP Challenge

Could you feed yourself on just $6 a day? That is the reality for nearly 70,000 Montgomery County residents who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to put food on the table. From March 18-20, the Montgomery County Food Council, Manna Food Center, Maryland Hunger Solutions, and the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) invite you to take part in the 2025 MoCo SNAP Challenge. This initiative encourages participants to experience firsthand the challenges of eating on a SNAP budget, fostering awareness of the program’s importance and the struggles faced by low-income individuals and families.

Your participation in the SNAP Challenge is more than just an eye-opening experience, it is an opportunity to advocate for change. With proposed cuts threatening to reduce SNAP benefits to approximately $4.80 per person per day, it is crucial to highlight the necessity of protecting and strengthening this vital program. By joining the challenge, you can shed light on food insecurity in our community, help push for increased SNAP benefits, and show solidarity with those who depend on this assistance. To get involved, commit to spending only $6 per day on food for three days, document your journey, and share your reflections on social media using #MoCoSNAPChallenge, #SNAPChallenge25, and #HandsOffSNAP. Please let us know if you participate in this impactful initiative by filling out this RSVP form.  FRAC is also keeping track of participation by state, so let them know you’re participating here.

We encourage all participants to share their experiences widely by posting about your meals, shopping struggles, and reflections on social media, write a blog post, or even engage with local media to amplify the message. If you take part, send your photos, videos, and receipts to SNAPChallenge@frac.org so they can compile a powerful narrative demonstrating why SNAP matters. Your voice can help ensure that policymakers understand the true impact of these benefits and the critical role they play in fighting food insecurity.

Thank you to Manna Food Center, Maryland Hunger Solutions, FRAC, and all the dedicated community partners working to protect and strengthen SNAP. The Montgomery County Food Council remains committed to advocating for policies that support food security and equitable access to nutritious food for all residents.
