Food Justice is Food Policy: Encouraging Action during the MLK SERVE-A-THON

The Montgomery County Food Council hosted a virtual workshop for the Hunger Free America MLK SERVE-A-THON on Tuesday, January 19th. Watch the workshop recording here.

What is the Hunger Free America MLK SERVE-A-THON? For 20 years, Hunger Free America has honored Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and work with service and action. The 2021 Serve-A-Thon on January 18th-19th included a series of virtual workshops featuring panel presentations and service activities focused on food justice. The Montgomery County Food Council and Maryland Hunger Solutions participated in a panel discussion from 5-6pm on January 19th entitled Food Justice is Food Policy: Community, state, and national levels of food assistance policy, and led a virtual service activity from 6-7pm to raise awareness of food resources around the country.

The Virtual Service Activity: Using social media language prepared by the Food Council and Maryland Hunger Solutions, volunteers created and shared content on their social media channels. This content focused on three hunger topic areas: how to find food assistance resources; how to find information about hunger in your area; and how to engage in advocacy on hunger issues in your area.

During the virtual service activity session, participants used the hashtag #ServicetoEndHunger and tagged MCFC (@mocofoodcouncil) and Maryland Hunger Solutions (@MarylandHunger) in all social media posts to engage their social network in the fight against hunger. Find our social media toolkit here
